Revival Field 1990-present,
60 sq ft section of Pig's Eye landfill in St. Paul, MN

Mel Chin mixes social, environmental and artistic statements in his projects and installations.  Viewer participation and artistic awareness in inner city neighborhoods benefit communities and social awareness.

Revival Field began in 1991as an attempt to use hyperaccumulator plants to extract heavy metals from contaminated soil.  The project heals toxic landfills and recovers metal ore from the plants.

Bare, plain steel fencing transforms into vibrant growth in a welcoming, green circle of plants.  The tension between the geometric square and the organic circle relates to the tension of communities living near toxic waste.
