Portia Munson

Reflecting Pool, 2013, found blue plastic, 15' x 20", PPOW Gallery

Narcissus Infinity, 2009

Rose - Peony, 2003

Portia Munson's mandalas made by using a high resolution scanner capture the beauty and vibrance of flowers taken apart and rearranged.  She began making them while reflecting on the "fleeting lives of flowers and people."  The symmetry and balance of the cirlce creates feelings of peace and harmony.  Various flower textures play with each other in a magical dance.

Reflecting Pool sadly contrasts to the beauty of the mandalas.  Disheveled, broken bits of plastic trash scream in disharmony.  Unwanted, broken, wasted things sadly huddle together unified by blue monochrome.  The found objects reflect a superficial consumerism that clutters landfills and pollutes the environment.  Articles once so needed  are quickly dumped into a sad, depressing mess.
